Why this label
Trafigura bases its position on UK expert findings and on a 2009 joint statement in the English group claim, which it says it settled at GBP 950 per claimant with no acknowledgement of liabilityS4. Trafigura's own page records that Ivorian courts convicted the heads of the local contractor and agent for poisoning. UN experts said in July 2026 that thousands of victims remain without justice, compensation or effective remediesS7. The Dutch case dealt with the export from Amsterdam, not harm in Ivory CoastS5S7. We read no court finding that settles whether the slops caused deaths. The records do not permit a responsible conclusion either way.
Current procedural position
No court finding on causation of deaths found. Ivory Coast settlement of 13 February 2007 and English group claim settlement of September 2009, both per TrafiguraS4. UN experts call for remedies as of July 2026S7.
Record supporting the assessment
unable to identify a link between exposure to the chemicals released from the slops and deaths
thousands of victims still remain without justice, compensation, or effective remedies
Conflicting or limiting record
the slops could at worse have caused a range of short term low-level flu-like symptoms and anxiety
